The Impact of Trees on Your Property + Planting Tips

Many homes across America have trees either in their back or front yards. We see them every day when we leave, we clean up when leaves or branches when they fall, but have you ever taken the time to think about the real value they bring to your home?

For starters, they provide us with privacy, which is great for two reasons. One being the obvious reason of that they keep nosey neighbors and passing drivers from looking in on what you and your family are doing. The other being that homebuyers love privacy, meaning that if you were to sell your home, the trees would be a big selling point.

Here are some of the other benefits of trees on your property:

Curb Appeal

According to Realty 101 , landscaping can add around 10 to 20 percent more value to your property. Commercial areas with trees are also more likely to attract customers.

Efficiency

According to the U.S. Forest Service, “trees properly placed around buildings can reduce air conditioning needs by 30 percent and can save 20 to 50 percent in energy used for heating.”

Trees and landscaping could also factor into how much you receive for your home if and when you sell it. Well planted and maintained trees could help you get more money for your home than if there were nothing in the yard. Even if you aren’t selling your home, though, trees also provide some pretty nice fringe benefits as well. If it is a hot day and the sun is beating down, the trees can provide necessary shade, allowing you to cool off.

If you live in an area that sees a great deal of precipitation, trees can help prevent flooding. The runoff water from a heavy rain or a spring melt will more than likely be absorbed by the trees’ roots, helping to keep this moisture out of your yard or, worse, your basement. Also, during these storms, trees can provide your home with a bit of protection from high winds and any small debris that might be blowing along with it.

Tips for Planting Trees

Cold Stream Farm supplies bare root trees which come without soil on their roots- and ready to be planted. Because bareroot trees don’t come with any soil, they need to be planted as quickly as possible.

Dig a hole

Star by digging a hole that is around two to three times as wide as the roots on your tree. Be sure to give the tree several feet from other trees or surrounding plants.

Plant the tree

Put the tree in the hole and cover the roots with loose soil. Once the tree is successfully placed in the soil you will need to stabilize the tree with bamboo stakes and cable ties. The bamboo stakes will help ensure that the tree remains upright and also provides balance. Place the stakes in the soil next to the tree and attach them to the tree using cable ties.

Water the soil

Once the tree has been planted, be sure to thoroughly water it to help it settle into the soil.
